After years building a career with luxury brands and luxury businesses, I’ve learned the one true luxury is time. Once it’s gone, it’s lost forever, and there never seems to be enough of it for however long our lifetimes are here on earth.
For this reason, the travel I plan for myself and for others make the most of the time that we have with loved ones, discovering new experiences together where memories are made and the time spent traveling is an investment in your well-being as a whole. My own happiest memories are from travels abroad with friends or with family, experiencing something new, taking advantage of the short time we have with one another.
One experience that figures prominently in mind from these memories is a special restaurant on the coast of Uruguay called La Huella. It’s located in the small fishing village of Jose Ignacio, just steps from the water’s edge. I first visited here with a friend when we took a few days’ trip to Uruguay from Buenos Aires. The fresh fish was delicious, as was their cocktails, but it was the warm atmosphere, the close view of the water, the cozy blankets made available for that unexpected breeze— and the international, attractive, and laid-back crowd that had me returning years later. The vibe was truly wandernest at its core. We very much felt at home.
Jose Ignacio is an unpretentious beach town, where slow travel is most definitely savored. Yet it also has a sophisticated flair, aptly described as boho-chic— where stylish visitors from nearby Buenos Aires, Brazil, Chile, and others from the U.S. and Europe come to enjoy its vibrant restaurant and art scene. The destination was also recently covered in depth by Yolo Journal, a travel Substack we love (and a fabulous one to follow for travel advice!)
In late 2021 Jose Ignacio became home to one of internationally-acclaimed artist James Turrell’s spectacular Skyspace series, Ta Khut, at the family-run hotel Posada Ayana. Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry’s foundation, where his monumental work is on display over 74 acres of nature, is another cultural highlight nearby.
